Life Savers Rally VII to honor Legacy of Bryan Barrow
Heartfelt condolences were recently extended to the family of Gift of Life board member Anne Peterson and her husband Dr. Bruce Barrow when they lost their seventeen-year-old son, Bryan, in a car accident prior to spring break. Bryan was an organ donor and was able to save the lives of five people. Bryan had already discussed his decision to be an organ donor with his family. His obituary reflected a colorful, courageous and caring young man with many friends.
On Tuesday, October 20th, Bryan's legacy will be honored at the seventh annual Life Savers Rally at Kansas City's Plaza Library. His mother, former television anchor, Anne Peterson, will be the featured keynote speaker for this gathering of 250 selected high school students. The intention of Rally is to train student leaders to take the program back to their schools and to support the efforts of Gift of Life to build awareness of the critical need for organ and tissue donation.
Drivers Education Program Include Organ and Tissue Donation Each summer the Olathe school district hosts a summer Drivers Education program for up to four hundred students. This year, they have invited Director of Education Kim Harbur, to deliver the Life Savers classroom education program to build awareness of the critical need for organ and tissue donation. The key message for students is to have a conversation with you loved ones, once you understand the importance and value of registering as an organ and tissue donor.

Funding a Transplant?
Periodically Gift of Life receives requests from individuals challenged to meet the expense of a transplant. Do you have a success story or cautionary tale to share on this topic? The first line of action should be to make an appointment with your hospital social worker, but Gift of Life would like to support that effort with tips for local patients that need financial assistance during their transplant journey. Contact andyd@giftdonor.org or call 913 851-1947x13 to receive a copy of the information.
Volunteers Staff Chili
Team for DeSoto Rotary
Life Mentors formed the Gift of Life chili team to raise funds for the program in a competition hosted by Oklahoma Joe's and the DeSoto Rotary Club on May 30th. Team members included Cheryl Davis, Andy Staley, Wendy Peck, Andy Donnelly, David and Lydia Jeter and Keith Anderson. The annual event honored Libby Stone, a DeSoto resident who received a liver transplant nearly one year ago. Transplant surgeon Dr. Jameson Forster from the University of Kansas Medical Center provided the secret recipe for his peanut butter-based chili.

Dan Lowe Makes Good on Auction Promise - Very Good!
When Flip Short, Board Chair of ViraCor bought a "Day with Dan Lowe" at the recent GoSeeDoKC fundraising auction he had no idea what he bargained for. Lowe, CEO of RED Development arranged for Flip and other guests to fly on a private jet to tour Schussler Creative in Minneapolis. The infamous Steve Schussler, founder and CEO, developed the concepts for the Rainforest and T-Rex restaurants among other innovative concepts. Schussler and his creative team graciously showed their guest over eight restaurant concepts including fire and ice and ice vodka bar --- and the National Hotdog Hall of Fame designed for stadiums and family venues. The latest joint effort between Lowe and Schussler is Backfire Barbeque, an Orange County Choppers motorcycle theme that will open this summer at The Legends in Kansas City, Kansas.
Give to Live Mountain Bikers
The Gift of Life web site touched lives in northern California when Tad Henderson, a recipient brother and mountain biker paid a visit. His mountain bike team, DebShred, participates in twelve to fifteen races in the Napa Valley and Marin County area around San Francisco to build awareness for good causes with a story to tell. Currently, their efforts promote The Brain Tumor Foundation and honor the late Deborah Parsons-Roth, nicknamed "DebShred", a mountain biker friend who died from a brain tumor at the age of 39. Attracted to the "Give to Live" artwork created by Draw the Line advertising for the Gift of Life web site, they will now feature the tag line and Gift of Life web address, www.giftdonor.org on their shirts to promote awareness of the critical need for organ and tissue donation. The races began this spring and we will be tracking our team on the web site.
New National Donor Memorial Website Launched
The United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) now has an expanded National Donor Memorial Website (www.donormemorial.org). This tribute-driven site honors organ and tissue donors in this country, highlights the impact of their gift of life on the lives of so many others, and underscores the critical importance of increasing organ donation.
