Donation
facts
- A discussion with your family is the most important step
to becoming a donor. Your family will have the final consent
regarding your decision about organ and tissue donation.
- At the time of death, your medical condition will determine
what organs and tissues can be donated.
- Organ and tissue donation takes place only after every effort
has been made to save your life and death has been legally declared.
- Donation does not interfere with funeral plans including open
casket services. There is no cost to the donor family for organ
an dtissue donation, however funeral costs remain the responsibility
of the family.
- Transplanted organs include the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys,
pancreas and small intenstine. Tissues include heart valves,
eyes, corneas, bones, skin, ligaments, tendons and blood vessels.
- Organ and tissue donation is not opposed by any major religious
organizations.
- A living donor is an individual who donates a kidney, part
of a lung or part of a liver while they are still alive.
